Across the country, vigils are set to make a statement that our children's health is more important than the profits of insurance companies. On Thursday, there will be a historic vote in Congress to override President Bush's veto of the expansion of State Children's Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP).
The bill maintains coverage for the more than 6 million children already
enrolled and extends health care coverage to another 4 million uninsured
children. It was approved by large bipartisan
votes in both the House
and Senate.
But the 265–159
House vote fell two dozen short of the of the two-thirds majority needed to
override Bush’s veto.
Participants at the Capitol Hill rally and the other events hope to convince
enough Republican lawmakers to buck Bush’s veto and listen to the vast majority
of voters who say the children’s
health bill should become law. A recent poll showed 81 percent of Democrats, 69 percent of
Independents and 61 percent of Republicans back the SCHIP legislation.
Take five minutes to call your Congressman and Senator today and ask them to override the President's veto of SCHIP and that children are more important than the profits of the insurance industry at 202-225-3121 or 202-224-3121.
