Mahan signs pledge

Monty Mahan, candidate for Kitsap County (WA.) Commissioner, recently sent in his signed pledge and questionaire. Currently the Executive Director of the Pierce Conservation District, Monty has a broad range of civic experience that will serve the citizens of Kitsap County well. He's already been out knocking on doors and meeting with his future constituents and his "citizens first" attitude is impressing folks.

Here are Monty's answers to our questionaire:

Why are you seeking office?: To fix some big problems related to economy, transportation and environment that have not been addressed over the past 20 years
What qualifies you to represent working families?: I've been a blue collar worker, I've shoveled asphalt, driven trucks, framed houses, strung wire, laid plumbing, and a host of other jobs. I know how it is to work hard for your money and be treated poorly by management
What are the main issues affecting the people you would represent?: Lack of access to family quality jobs, decent affordable healthcare
What is your position on the "Right to Work" issue? Taft-Hartley is just plain wrong. Right to work should mean right to organize without unfair pressure or outright harassment from employers.
Do you feel government entities should change zoning laws to accommodate big block retailers like Wal-Mart?: No. My history on this topic is well documented.
How would you use your position to address America's health care crisis?: I would insist that all workers have access to decent, affordable health care.
What is your position on living wage ordinances?: I'm in support of living wage ordinances.
What is your position on trade agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO?: They make the playing field uneven for businesses and labor alike. In a completely open market those with less scruples seem to benefit most.
