UW cancels contract over sweatshop dispute

What a win for the great folks pushing sweat-free resolutions and passionately fighting for workers around the world. Thanks to super volunteer Mary Retallick for sending me this blurb...

From the Seattle Times.

The University of Washington has severed its licensing agreement with Russell Corp., maker of hats, T-shirts, sweat shirts and other items bearing the UW logo.

The move follows a report issued in November saying Russell had threatened workers at a factory in Honduras saying the plant would close if workers unionized. After union groups formed, the plant did close with Russell citing economic reasons.

The November report was written by The Worker Rights Consortium, a labor-rights-monitoring organization sponsored by 185 universities. In ending its agreement with Russell, the UW joins more than 10 other universities including Cornell, Duke and the University of Michigan.
